Why Family Photos are Important
Have you ever asked yourself why family photos are important? Do they really mean that much to families?
Perhaps a better question would be: will I feel this way when one of our family members have passed on? Or how will I think about this if someone I love tragically experiences dementia or Alzheimer’s disease?
Although these are difficult truths to come to terms with, they are possibilities of life.
The Source of Our Memories
I believe family photos are a source of memories for our families. We can share these memories with others. It provides entertainment, joy, and the chance to look back and remember what we were like in our lives. They give us the chance to remind ourselves of the great (or painful) times we had. But not only that, family photos give us the chance to relive those tiny moments. They are frozen fragments of our past, as we lose track of the one thing we all wish we had –time.
Daily Reminders
Our families are important to us, and our family photos are daily reminders of that. They help us show much we care about each individual in our family, our unit. Even if that means, just for a day we got together, coordinated outfits, and pretended no one argued in the car. One could say that they are small tokens of our love for one another.
Reasons to Share
We use family photos to share portraits of our loved ones, coworkers, and even strangers. Do you remember the time when parents or grandparents would pull out printed photos of their children from their pocketbook?
Notwithstanding, everyday there’s someone around the world showing their family photos to a stranger, loved one, or friend. They’re saying things like: “My look how much they’ve grown”, or “I remember when… “. Sharing family photos sometimes feels like a rite of passage, but you can only do this if you take them first.
Summary: Why Family Photos are Important
In closing, I would like to say that I believe they help us celebrate our lives together.
I hope that if I am blessed to be old and gray, that my children and grandchildren come to visit. I hope they bring me memories of their first tooth, “grown up” teeth, trendy fashion, and hairstyles.
With that being said, I long for the moment I can pull out old albums and scrapbooks of our lives together. And I long for the day that our descendants can cherish the family heirlooms we left behind. I went into detail about why prints matter so much to me here.
I’m curious to hear why you think they’re important? Give me a shout sharing your thoughts or personal stories.
Finally, as a Houston family photographer, I’d love to be the one that documents your family’s memories.
