What to Bring to Your Headshots

Do you have headshots coming up? Not sure how to prepare for them? You’re not alone! Things can get a little hectic when preparing for a photo session. A good headshot is a must have for any professional. Here’s what to bring to your headshots: 

1. A  positive attitude

If I’m being honest, there aren’t many people in the world who are incredibly comfortable in front of the camera. A selfie and a professional camera are quite different.

Bring a positive attitude and trust the process. You’ll be nervous when we get started, but as the session progresses, you’ll begin to feel at ease. My specialty is helping clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. 

2. One to two outfits

I recommend bringing at least two outfits for your headshots. The first outfit can be a uniform or business professional suit for the standard headshot. Your second outfit can be a collared shirt, polo, or dress for a business casual or professional business look.

I’m a fan of layers at all times unless it’s summer time. When it comes to colors, a solid color blouse or shirt underneath a different color jacket, coat, or blazer on top helps bring depth and texture to your session. 

3. Dress shoes 

Wearing dress shoes for headshots silly, I know. However, a nice pair of dress or clean soles will do the trick. This is especially helpful if you’ll want full body shots while you’re here.

If you have a pair of black or brown closed-toe shoes, even better. These colors coupled with the layers in your clothing provide a nice, rich look to your images. 

 4. A backup outfit

What happens when you spill a cup of coffee, something tears or rips on your attire? Do you have a backup ready? If not, bringing a backup is a great idea and is actually recommended in the event of wardrobe malfunctions and mishaps.

5. Hairbrush or comb

A hairbrush or comb for moving your stray hairs is ideal, especially if you don’t use hairspray. Sometimes moving the hair away from your face becomes a stubborn task, and you just need a brush or comb to do the trick. 

6. Chapstick or moisturizer

Chapstick and skin moisturizer is especially important if you have dry skin or lips. These two moisturizers are staples during the fall and winter months.  

7. Jewelry and accessories

Complete your look with added earrings, a ring, necklace or nice watch. Accessories help add texture and give the wandering eyes something else to look at in the photo.
