Wedding Wisdom Advice From a Married Couple -Jaamarah & Jordan | Houston Wedding Photographer

As a wedding photographer, I think it’s important to believe in the beauty and power of love and marriage. You and your partner will soon embark on an amazing journey of partnership, building bonds of trust, communication, and affection.

Wedding wisdom advice  from a married couple

Today’s blog post is dedicated to providing wisdom and advice to couples who will soon embark on the journey of marriage or who have recently tied the knot. I reached out to my best friend, Jaamarah, to offer advice to new couples who are about to get married.

The Backstory

I have known Jaamarah since our high school days. In fact, she and her husband were my very first clients! Jaamarah met her soulmate, Jordan, back in 2012 and they’ve been hooked ever since. Jaamarah and Jordan are nearing 9 years of marriage this year. Here’s what she had to say:

Marriage is hard work.

Jaamarah: “…That marriage is hard work and that there will be good times and tough ones. It is up to [you] to want put in the effort to make it work through it all. To me, marriage can be like a roller coaster. At times it can be fun and exciting, while at others it can be overwhelming.”

And it ain’t no joke. Marriage is not for the faint. When we say it is hard work, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. It just means that just like anything, it takes time, dedication, and tenacity. You can’t just get up and walk away (I mean you can, but give yourself some time to exhaust all options before going that route). Every marriage has [its] good times and…trying times. No marriage is perfect, but with the right amount of patience, trust, communication, those bumps are a lot easier to tackle when you’re in it 100%.

Keep God in and everyone else out.

Jaamarah: “The biggest thing is to keep God in the marriage and your family and friends out of your business. Everyone is not happy for you and do not want y’all to succeed as a couple. Y’all have to have trust and be able to depend on each other. Especially during tough times and they can come in all different forms.”

Whether you believe in God or not, have something to keep you grounded when you experience difficult times. As the old saying goes, do not tell your family or friends about all of the troubles in your relationship. Why? After you have had time to communicate and forgive your spouse, they’ll still be holding on to the anger and grudge. This can be difficult for family and friends, and can end up causing more problems on your other relationships. It is best to find a higher power or therapist to help you all cope during those trying times.

Don’t lose yourself.

Jaamarah: “We also have to remember to not to lose ourselves within a marriage. It can be a lot when becoming a wife, parent, and following our career. We have to make time for ourselves as well as our spouses and children. If we don’t make even a little time for ourselves it can become overwhelming.

How she stays in tune with herself:

Jaamarah: “…Taking a bit of time for myself everyday is important to me. Even if it is just a 30 minute bath to relax. Otherwise it is so easy to get overwhelmed and stressed.”

This was serious a wakeup call for me. For someone who continuously gives and gives and gives. It’s hard to keep yourself in balance and offer something to yourself. Don’t forget to make time for yourself. No, it doesn’t make you selfish. Yes, we know you love your spouse. But let me explain something to you, if you are exhausted with nothing for yourself, you can’t expect to give your all to your spouse and family.

I took Jaamarah’s advice and started taking lavender, epsom salt baths. It’s seriously something I look forward to each week.
