Wedding Photography Terms and Jargon | Houston Wedding Photographer
Sometimes as photographers, we tend to use a lot of jargon and terminology that clients may not understand. I’ve condensed this list as much as I could while still keeping it as valuable to you as possible.
Here’s the breakdown on some wedding photography terms and what they mean
Wedding Photography Terms – Styles
First let’s go over wedding photography terms and jargon related to wedding styles. This is referring to how a photographer shoots and edits.
Candid – Candid images are taken in the moment. These images are lifestyle oriented and aren’t posed. They are essentially documentary style images.
Light and Airy – Light and Airy is a photographic editing style that is typically overexposed and bright. Most of the time there isn’t much detail shown in these images.
Dark and Moody – Dark and Moody is a photographic editing style that is typically underexposed or dark with hints of grain. These images don’t typically print well on paper.
Romantic – These are images that reflect you two interacting with each other doing the things that you typically do. This could be taking the time to be present in the moment while holding hands and staring into each other’s eyes. Whatever you consider to be romance for you two, is what you will do. Normally these photos feel sweeter and more intimate since they occur naturally.
Wedding Photography Terms – Specific Shots
Still related to how and what a photographer shoots, but are basics that every photographer shoots no matter how large or intimate your wedding is.
Traditional – Traditional wedding images are those typical poses and shots that happen at every wedding or ceremony no matter what. You and your partner standing and kissing, etc.
Details – I’m a sucker for detail shots. They are photos of the tiniest details you’ve spent months or years planning to make your day perfect. Examples of detail shots are shoes, florals, rings and other special jewelry, florals, bouquet, table place settings, and more.
Formals – I refer to formals as photos of the couple along with family and wedding party members. These are the standard wedding poses and groupings of photos of those most important to you and your partner. Traditionally these are done immediately following the ceremony (during cocktail hour). However, formals can also be done prior to the ceremony if you are having a First Look.
Post Processing, Capture and Delivery
RAW – RAW images are much like meat that hasn’t been cooked properly yet. They haven’t been post processed or edited and are the images just as they’ve come straight out of the camera.
JPEG – JPEG or .jpg is the format of the final images you’ll receive in your online digital wedding gallery.
Online Gallery – Your online gallery is where all of your digital images from your wedding will be hosted. This is where you will be able to view and download your images from your wedding day.
Culling – Culling is the process of us eliminating bad shots like blinks, blurs, under/overexposed shots and duplicated. This is the first step in the editing process.
Other Wedding Photography Terms and Lingo
Collections – Collections are what others refer to as packages. It is a set of products or services offered as a bundle at a certain price.
First Look – A first look is when both partners see each other prior to the ceremony in order to allow more time for photographs, as well as more intimate moments in private. Most often, you will come behind your partner (or vice versa) and then tap them on their shoulder. Your partner will then turn around and we’ll capture your reactions to one another.
A La Carte – This is when you purchase additional products or add-ons that are not a part of your collection or package.
Wedding Photography Terms and Jargon Conclusion
In conclusion, there is lots of jargon and terminology used by photographers. In the end though, it doesn’t always make sense to clients. I hope this list has helped you better understand wedding photography terms as you search for the best photographer for you.
