Outfits for Senior Pictures: How Many & What to Wear

One of the most enjoyable things my high school seniors do is choosing what outfits to wear for senior pictures. Although the style and fashion changes throughout the years, a few things remain the same. Let’s talk about some of those things now.

Outfits for Senior Pictures

Firstly, I typically say you’ll want between two to three outfits for your senior portraits. Although it’s rare, you can skid by with a fourth. However, by that time you’re worn out and it’ll make it extremely difficult for you to choose your favorite images. Therefore your fourth outfit is really a backup (which I always recommend).

Now as far as what type of outfits for senior pictures you should wear, I recommend you choose something:

  • Casual,
  • Formal, and
  • “You”

Something Casual

Your casual outfit could be your everyday style. This would be something you would wear everyday. You might wear jeans and pair them with a nice solid, striped, or plaid top. Some seniors choose to do a college top for this but you don’t have to. You can easily bring props to tie that into your session.

Formal Wear Outfit for Senior Pictures

Next up for something formal for a “power” look. For example, you could choose a suit, a dress or gown, or maybe even a jumpsuit. This is the time for you to spice it up. Whatever you choose, just make sure you’re comfortable and that you complete the entire look.

Think a less scaled PROM look and don’t forget the shoes are equally important. If you want, you can even dress up your casual outfit by wearing heels. Regardless, you want to make sure you’re comfortable. Oh, and bring some backup shoes just in case!

As an alternative, some people choose to do the classic cap and gown look for this. However, this is not something I suggest as you don’t typically receive your cap and gown until about one month prior to graduation. By that time my calendar is all booked with other portraits and next year’s seniors.

Something “You”

Finally, when it comes down to your “you” look. You can dress as up or down as you like. In theory, all of your outfits should represent you in some way. You’ve got so many different sides to who you are as a person, and you want to capture that in your senior pictures.

Many high school seniors choose to add in their favorite hobbies, interests, or accolades.

You can do as little or as much as you like.

Outfits for Senior Pictures Conclusion

In conclusion, whatever you choose to wear will need to pair well with your location(s) of your senior pictures. My recommendation would be 2-3, and no more than 4 if absolutely necessary. As long as you’re comfortable and representing yourself, you’re bound to love them. This post is meant to serve as a guide not a rule of thumb, so feel free to do as you like.
