How to Prepare for Your Senior Pictures Girls
Tips from Houston Senior Photographers
Senior sessions are like jam to my slice of toast! I’ve been shooting senior pictures since I started in photography and they have a serious place in my heart. I wanted to give you a few tips to help you get ready for this epic session of yours. If you follow these tips on how to prepare for your senior pictures, girls –, you’ll be prepared for nearly any photo session with me.
Let’s get started!
Here’s how to prepare for senior pictures girls!
Wardrobe or outfits
You’ll want to bring at least three outfits to wear for your senior pictures. Lay them out so they’re ready to go and shoot me texts of their outfits, so we can decide if we need to make any location changes. Also, keep your clothes on hangers and steam or iron if necessary, we want as few wrinkles as possible.
Don’t leave home without the accessories
Carry your jewelry (earrings, bracelets, watches, rings, necklaces) etc in a small carry bag. It can be like a small makeup bag or you can even put them in those small ziplocks so they don’t tangle or get mixed up with everything else.
Additionally, don’t forget to pack your other accessories that make for layering and textures like: scarves, headbands, and belts. Matching tights, socks and shoes sometimes get left behind so put these in the same bag or area if you can. See how accessories can make or break your senior portraits.
Props
Whether you’re bringing your ballet or dance shoes, sports gear, musical instrument, or favorite books to read, have that laid out and packed up ready to go as well. If you’re driving and want your car to be in the photos, make sure it’s washed 1-2 days prior to your session so that it’s squeaky clean.
Beauty sleep
Get your beauty sleep, Aurora. You’ll want to be well rested so that you won’t tire out during the session. It’s gonna be a pretty eventful day so making sure you’re hydrated and have gotten some good rest will work wonders for you.
Haircuts and styling
If you need your ends clipped or want to sport a new cut, I recommend getting this done about one to two weeks prior to your session. This gives it time to grow back or for you to switch it up in case you change it dramatically only to find out you don’t really like it. If you’ll be getting the same style as normal, you can book your hair appointment 1-2 days prior to your session instead.
Makeup
Depending on your photographer, you’ll need to either cover the cost for your own makeup or book a photographer who includes it in your senior session fee.
For makeup tips, you can read this post.
If you wake up a couple of days before your session, or even the morning of, and notice acne on your face –don’t worry about it. Try not to pick at it since that’ll only make it worse and more difficult to get rid of. Trust me, I learned this one the hard way lol. Just add some light concealer over it and your usual coverage and let it be.
Mani/Pedis
For all day sessions, I recommend getting a manicure (and pedicure if you want to splurge) the day before since you’ll be with me the entire day for the most part of your session, and nail shops tend to get pretty busy and run behind. I prefer French tips or neutral colors (even clear coats) since they blend with all outfit and wardrobe pieces. That way you can have a clean appearance and won’t have to worry about chipped paint showing in your images.
Mirroring
If you feel awkward in front of the camera or have never really had professional photos taken, you might consider what I call “Mirror Posing”. This is basically where you stand in front of the mirror and practice your smile and some cute poses. I can also send you over a copy of the Pinterest board we looked at during your consultation. When you complete your questionnaire, it asks about things you like so that we have some cool things to talk about during your session.
Closing “How to Prepare for Senior Pictures Girls”
Almost all of my clients tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera. After every single session they tell me they had a blast and made them feel comfortable. That’s legit my job. I’ll help you feel confident and look your best in your images.
