This week I’m putting a lot of focus on cost and how much you can expect to spend for quality portraits and photos. First off, I’d like to say “woo hoo”! If you’re researching how much a family photoshoot costs, it’s likely you’ve never had one done. So thanks for taking the first step in professionally documenting your family’s memories.

Now, when it comes to asking “How much does a family photoshoot cost?”, you’re likely to get a different answer from different people. While there’s no exact number, and there are exceptions, I’ll be providing a range to better help you.

Firstly, while photography is an art, it is also a business. With that being said, there are minimums that every photographer (and business owner) has to make. Other factors to consider is if they’re a high volume or low volume family photographer. All numbers mentioned are my personal opinion based on researching various professional photographers.

Family Photoshoot Costs from Luxury Photographers

A low volume, full-service studio that offers customized and luxury service will mostly be on the higher end. A family photoshoot with a luxury photography studio who provides a mix of candid and posed images, ranges between $200 and $700. Most of the time this cost does not include any physical or digital products. You can expect to invest an additional $2000+ if you plan on adding digitals, wall art, or photo albums. In my own experiences, collections (or packages) that contain all of these (wall art, photo albums, and digital images), will cost you $6000 or more.

While we’re on the topic of artwork….

The product costs don’t really change unless you’re dealing with a photographer who prints in a shop. This includes photographers with little to no knowledge of photographic artwork.

I’ve been a print specialist for more than 5 years and I can tell you that a vast number of photographers are not well-versed when it comes to printing. If a photographer is selling a standard 8×10” print or smaller for $50 or less, they are most likely paying you to print the image.

When adding mat boards or mounting the print, the cost ranges from about $175 to $300 per image. You can also expect to pay this much for archival quality photographic paper

Back to the topic of “How much does a family photoshoot cost?”

On the lower end of the spectrum, a family photoshoot with digital images only OR a select few products, costs between $500 and $1500. At this range, you can expect to receive less personalization on things like location selection, wardrobe guidance, etc. I would say that most all-inclusive photographers, or photographers who provide a certain number of digitals with the family photoshoot, are within this range. For the most part, your photographer can afford to lower the price, because they’re providing less service than a luxury studio. The decrease in service could be: availability, less communication, no discovery calls or consultations, less shoot time, or something else.

As far as the time and dates are concerned, your family photographer will help narrow down that for you too!

Taking into account if you’ve already got wardrobe pieces in your closet or want to do a bit of shameless shopping, once outfits are done it’s quite easy.

In summary, a family photoshoot that includes some product could range anywhere between $500 to $6000 or more on a standard family photo session.

Whether you’re looking for a lifestyle photographer who provides candids, or a traditional family photographer who does more posing. What really matters is that you have photos of your family. As you can see, there’s a family photographer for different budgets and the cost of them varies.
