What is an Elopement & How to Elope in Texas

Redefining what an elopement is today.
Elopements are now considered a “thing” that couples can do. In fact, a growing number of couples are choosing this route to tying the knot versus a traditional big ass wedding. So what’s changed?
What is considered an elopement?
Today’s elopement is a wedding ceremony where couples choose to focus on their love for each other rather than tradition. Well that’s at least my definition of what it means to elope. Elopements are increasingly popular as couples seek alternative ways to express their love. Whether it’s just the two of you, or a handful of other people. Elopements are focused on your unity and personal connection to each other.
Some say elopements are taking off frivolously without anyone knowing and coming back “hitched”. In contrast, some elopements take lots of planning. Several couples still choose a date, outfits, florals, cake, and even specific locations.

Common reasons to elope
- saving money for other priorities rather a big ass wedding
- more intimate setting with only the closest friends and family members
- something different than a traditional, large wedding
- less time planning and entertaining guests
- a full day focused only on you! without the drama and need to entertain family and friends
If you’re interested in eloping in Texas, but aren’t sure where to start, I’ve created a post just for you.

Ideas on places to elope in Texas
- Elope at a city park or botanic garden. Eleanor Tinsley Park, Buffalo Bayou, Discovery Green and Mercer Botanic Garden are just a few that come to mind in Houston. Just outside the city in The Woodlands is North Shore which has a pavilion.
I’ve yet to photograph a courthouse wedding in Houston (although I’ve gotten pretty close). However, it’s definitely on my wishlist! If you’re looking for a courthouse to get married in, For couples eloping in Houston, the city marries couples at the Herbert W. Gee Municipal Courthouse on weekdays and Saturdays.
- I won’t turn down a beach elopement unless a hurricane or tropical storm is on the way. Galveston is popular in southeast Texas. Not too far from there is South Padre Island and Corpus Christi.
- There’s no shortage of lakes in Texas, that’s for sure. Lake Conroe, Lake Sam Rayburn and Lake Travis are all popular lakes in Texas.
- Go on an adventure and elope in a national park, state park or even a forest. Much like a hike or trail, marriage is a journey. Big Bend National Park is nothing short of amazing. Plus, I happen to be a big fan of Lake Livingston State Park myself. I graduated from Sam Houston State University, so it’s only right for me to include Sam Houston National Forest. These are Texas parks and forests of course, but you can always search for national parks and forests closest to you.
- Willing to fly an extra mile? Visit the elopement capital of the United States and marry there! Las Vegas is nothing short of shotgun chapels all over the city. You can even take it a step further and elope abroad in another country. However, if you’re looking to stay in Texas, the Hill Country makes a serene setting.
- On the other hand, if rural or calm settings don’t pique your interest. Maybe an urban setting is better. For instance, try a downtown rooftop, or a spot known for its art and music vibe, such as Eado in Houston.
Small wedding venues in houston like the Oak Atelier are another option for couples wanting to elope in a more traditional chapel or venue.
