Go Casual

Your first outfit choice can be casual. This can either be something you’d normally wear or you can try your luck and step out with a different style. Your casual outfit is going to be more ideal for your fun, relaxed, candid images where you two are just living in the moment. Some good choices for this are jeans with a nice shirt or blouse and nice, clean shoes tailored to this outfit.

Bring a more formal outfit

Aside from the stresses of coordinating the perfect look, dressing up to take photos together could be so much fun. You could even use this session as an excuse to step out. This doesn’t mean you have to wear a gown and tux or suit, a nice dress or skirt and suit or slacks with a button can do the trick. I personally like the more formal outfits for save-the-date cards and announcements submitted to the local newspaper or wedding website, but definitely go with what fits you and your partner best.

Matching is out, coordinating is in

Today it’s all about coordinating instead of matching. You don’t want to match too much, but you also don’t want to be polar opposites. I recommend staying within the same range of styles. For example, if your partner is wearing a suit and tie, you should consider a pant suit, dress, or more formalwear.

Think of the location

You’ll also want to dress for the location. If you guys are going for a natural, boho session, I wouldn’t recommend pastel colors, but something more neutral instead. This also includes session locations like standing in the middle of an open field –formal wear isn’t going to coordinate well with that type of location.

Additional coordinating engagement outfits tips:

You should also consider avoiding the following:

  • Logos, unless we’re doing a sports session and you’re wearing jerseys, etc.
  • Patterns – Try to stick with solid colors or minimal patterns. Plaid shirts are fine as long as your fiancé isn’t wearing stripes or polka dots. It’s a good rule of thumb to only have one partner wearing a pattern at a time.
  • Fluorescent colors – These don’t photograph well and also can cast bright color tones on your skin.
